I am the engineer who specifies this grade, and the 1608 is the PET strap I put forward for cotton bale packaging. It is a 16 mm × 0.8 mm strapping tape rated at 5,120 N with 11%–14% elongation, supplied at about 1,200 m per coil. Cotton is a specific job: a compressed bale pushes back hard after pressing, and it then sits through storage, trucking and international shipping where humidity and condensation are real. The 1608 is built for exactly that — enough high-tensile strength to hold a compressed bale, PET polyester that will not rust or degrade in damp conditions, and 1,200 m per coil for long runs at the gin. And I will say this up front, because it matters more than the strap: do not choose a cotton strap by width alone. Bale weight, density, dimensions, strap count, tensioning method and transport conditions decide the right specification — so tell me your bale and I will match it.
The 1608 coil. A 16 mm × 0.8 mm tape rated at 5,120 N — high-tensile and moisture-resistant for compressed cotton bales.
Grade PositioningHere is where the 1608 sits in the family, so the choice is explicit:
| Tier | Model | Width / thickness | Break strength | Load segment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 1208 / 1308 | 12–13 mm / 0.8 mm | ~2,900–4,200 N | Cartons, light goods |
| Flexible medium | 1608 (this product) | 16 mm / 0.8 mm | 5,120 N | Cotton bales, compressed bales, flexible medium loads |
| Heavy | 1910 | 19 mm / 1.0 mm | 7,600 N | Dense and heavy cargo |
For compressed cotton bales, the 1608 is the flexible medium grade — strong enough for the bale, still flexible enough to follow the bale's shape with good tension retention.
Key CharacteristicsWhy specify by the load, not the width: with cotton the common mistake is picking the widest strap available and assuming it is safest. It is not that simple. Each strap carries only part of the bale load — the total is divided by the number of straps and modified by the tensioning method — so a heavier or denser bale may need a stronger strap, or more straps, rather than a wider one. The 1608 is set as the flexible medium grade: PET polyester with high-tensile strength and good elongation, so it holds a compressed bale and still gives enough to absorb the spring-back and the knocks of handling and transit. When we quote a cotton account, we look at bale weight, density, dimensions and strap count first, then choose the specification — which is why the right answer is sometimes the 1608 and sometimes a heavier grade, and we will tell you honestly which.
Anti-Loosening, ExplainedLoosening is the cotton-bale failure you rarely see at the press but often find at the far end. After compression a bale is still settling, and in transport it loses a little of that stored energy. A strap with high creep will slowly slacken as the bale relaxes, so the bale arrives soft and the wrap, not the strap, is doing the work. The 1608 fights that with controlled elongation and good elastic recovery: it stretches within a known 11%–14% band and recovers with the bale rather than creeping away, holding the bale tight from the gin floor through storage and the sea leg. In one line for the buyer: on a settling bale you want a strap that springs back, not one that gives up.
Production and quality team. Extrusion, drawing and inspection are in-house — the reason the tape you buy is consistent from coil to coil.

Why 0.8 mm on this grade: cotton baling wants flexibility as much as strength, and thickness is where that balance is set. At 0.8 mm on a 16 mm width the 1608 reaches 5,120 N — enough for a compressed bale at the right strap count — while staying flexible enough to follow the bale and absorb spring-back without cracking at the seal or the feed. Go thicker and the tape turns stiff and may not seat cleanly around an irregular bale; go thinner and it loses the strength and retention the bale needs. We draw to a nominal 0.8 mm and verify it with a calibrated calliper at several points along each coil, because a tape that quietly arrives thin would quietly lose both strength and tension retention. In one line: 0.8 mm is the flexible medium point that suits bale work.
CompatibilitySupplied for cotton gins, bale processors, packaging distributors, agricultural businesses and industrial buyers — wherever compressed cotton bales are pressed, handled, stacked, stored, trucked or exported. The same grade also suits other flexible, compressible bales where tension retention and moisture resistance matter as much as raw strength.
A Cotton-Baling CaseHere is a case from a cotton gin I work with. Bales are pressed hard, then strapped and sent to storage before trucking and an export container. On a basic medium strap the gin kept finding bales arrive at the customer a little soft — the strap had crept as the bale relaxed, so the wrap carried more of the load than it should. We moved them onto the 1608, using the same manual tensioners and the same strap count. Because the tape holds its tension and recovers with the bale instead of creeping away, the bales arrived tight, and the moisture-resistant polyester removed the rust-staining worries they had with the old steel wire entirely. It is the case for the 1608 in a sentence: for a settling, damp-exposed bale, retention and material matter more than a wider strap.
Warehouse, inspection area and export loading under one roof — in-house control from extrusion through to container loading.
Quality ControlI have listed the checks; here is how they actually run, so the numbers are proven rather than printed. Tensile: a sample from each batch is clamped in the rig and pulled to failure, reading peak load and elongation — it must break above 5,120 N and stay within the 11%–14% window, or the batch is held, because on bale work the elongation band matters as much as the break figure. Dimension: a calibrated calliper checks width and thickness at several points along the coil and the length is metered as the band winds, so a 16 mm / 0.8 mm / 1,200 m coil is verified rather than assumed. Edge and surface: every coil passes an even-finish, burr-free inspection. Weld: we heat-seal a sample joint and load it to failure to confirm the seal holds at full strength — on a bale the seal is usually the first thing to give. A batch ships only when all four pass, and the record stays with us for traceability.
